Safety Message:

You are at the mall, and the group in front of you on the escalator takes two steps and just stops, right in the path of those behind them. You are taking an elevator to the lobby of a big hotel and as the doors open you are blocked by guests trying to board the elevator. You are flying Northwest Airlines and your flight overshoots its destination by 150 miles.

Do any of these scenarios ring a bell? What do they all have in common? A lack of SA, that’s what! Situation Awareness, or SA, is the perception of environmental elements within a volume of time and space, the comprehension of their meaning, and the projection of their status in the near future. SA is a critical part of everything we do, and next to common sense, perhaps one of the most basic characteristics of safety. We should always be aware of our surroundings, be aware of potential hazards and developing scenarios.

As professionally trained volunteers we are tasked with the responsibility for not just ourselves, but for others, be they cadets, fellow aviators, or the general public. On an Emergency Services mission or supporting Cadet Programs we must retain SA.

Think about it, make sure you are not one of “those” people.
